As with all other development projects, it is crucial to set the right strategy from the start. If you do not have a clear plan for your project, it can all collapse in a split second.

Today, PCB is a crucial component in the overall electronics construction. Therefore, you must know about all the different elements – and having the right strategy can be a massive help.

The strategy must, first and foremost, be based on the type of product you are working on. The requirements are very different depending on the end product, and this should be reflected in your strategy.


How complex is your project? 

  • Does your design have to be of a very high standard, like a satellite?
  • Or are the requirements not as stringent, like in a radio?

Create synergy between the design elements

PCB design is not just about connecting components on a circuit board. Depending on what you need to develop, there are many factors that have impact. These are, for example, track widths, isolation spacing, via types, signal frequencies, etc.

Therefore, your strategy needs to cover material selection, construction, surface selection, technology selection, placement of components and the many different standards. All these various sub-elements of the design process will be elaborated further in the blogs to follow.


To make your strategy, you must first determine how complex your design is:

  • How many layers do you need to route the design?
  • How should vias connect the different layers?
  • How should all the elements be put together?

The most important thing about the strategy is that you consider the entire process that lies ahead, and that you ensure the synergy between all parts. Doing so increases the chances of ending up with a product that meets the quality requirements and is feasible for production.
